There are chandeliers that evoke a tradition. And then there are pieces that are the tradition, that carry it not as a reference but as the very substance of what they are made of.
This original Ca' Rezzonico chandelier in ruby red Murano glass is the second kind, entirely and without reservation.
What makes it original
This is not a vintage reproduction, nor a reinterpretation of a historic style. It is an original Ca' Rezzonico, executed according to the techniques and formal canons established by the Murano master glassmakers who developed this structure, techniques that have not fundamentally changed because they cannot be improved upon. The Ca' Rezzonico is not a design that can be simplified without ceasing to be itself: its complexity is structural, its richness is the point, and every element that makes it what it is requires a level of craft that cannot be accelerated or approximated.
Craft and technique
The characteristic curved arms of the Ca' Rezzonico are not formed in a single piece. Each arm is composed of multiple individually blown glass segments: the bossole; threaded in sequence along a metal armature, a technique that allows the arms to achieve both the length and the curvature that define the style while maintaining the structural integrity required to support the weight of the decorative elements. Every flower, every leaf, every gold-detailed component is hand-formed separately by Murano master glassmakers and assembled into the final composition one element at a time. The gold details are not applied to the surface: they are fused into the glass during the blowing process, inseparable from the material. The ruby red glass itself is the result of a precise and demanding formula; the depth and intensity of the colour depends on the exact proportion of mineral oxides introduced into the molten glass, a balance that only experience can calibrate correctly.
Structure and composition
The chandelier develops through a monumental composition of curved arms, hand-formed cups, flowers and leaves that create a silhouette of exceptional visual density. No single element is incidental: every flower, every leaf, every curve of every arm is part of a formal logic that has been refined over centuries, logic that makes the Ca' Rezzonico immediately recognisable from any angle and at any distance. The intensity of the ruby red glass unifies the composition: the colour moves through every element, from the arms to the cups to the floral details, held together by the warmth of the gold that accents the transitions and the terminals.
Light behaviour
Ruby red Murano glass transforms entirely when lit from within. What reads in ambient light as a deep, jewel-like red becomes, under illumination, a translucent field of garnet and amber, the light passes through the glass and is cast across the surrounding surfaces as coloured reflections that shift with the angle of the source and the position of the observer. The gold details amplify this effect: each gold point catches the coloured light from the glass elements around it and returns it to the room as a warm, secondary reflection. In a high-ceilinged space with the right ambient conditions, the chandelier does not simply light the room, it colours it.
