The craft
Corteccia — the Italian word for bark — names both the technique and the effect. Each of the 80 glass tubes is individually mouth-blown by Venetian maestri vetrai in a Murano fornace, and then worked at the surface to produce the characteristic texture: irregular, organic, dimensional, resembling the grain of weathered wood or the surface of aged stone. No two tubes are identical. This is not a marketing claim — it is a technical inevitability. The corteccia texture is produced by hand, in molten glass, at high temperature, where no two movements of the glassblower's tools will ever produce precisely the same result. Across 80 tubes, the cumulative effect is a surface of extraordinary visual complexity: a chandelier that rewards close inspection as much as it commands from across a room. The optical consequence of the corteccia surface is equally significant. Where smooth glass transmits light directly, bark-textured glass scatters it — breaking the beam into a warm, diffuse pattern that spreads across walls and ceilings in organic, shifting forms. A minimum ceiling height of 12 ft is recommended to allow the full hanging length to read correctly and to maintain safe clearance above head height. The E14 fitting is compatible with all standard and LED filament bulbs; warm-white filament LEDs in the 2200–2700K range are recommended to complement the organic warmth of the corteccia glass.
Note: As with every hand-blown glass piece produced in the fornaci of Murano, slight variations in tube texture, diameter, and surface character are inherent to the corteccia technique — not imperfections, but the direct evidence of individual hand production.
