The alabaster technique
Alabastro is one of the most demanding and distinctive techniques in the Murano glassmaking tradition. Unlike transparent or simply coloured glass, alabastro is produced by introducing specific mineral compounds into the molten glass mixture, creating an opaque or semi-opaque material with a characteristic veined, marbled internal structure. No two elements are identical the pattern of veining that develops during the blowing process is entirely determined by the movement of the material in the master glassmaker's hands, and by the specific thermal conditions of each individual blow.
The practical effect of this technique on light is significant and unlike anything a standard glass finish produces. Light does not pass through alabastro directly: it enters the glass and is immediately scattered by the internal texture, emerging as a diffused, even glow with a warmth and softness that approaches the quality of candlelight. In pink, this effect acquires an additional register the combination of the alabaster diffusion and the rose tones of the glass produces a light that is flattering, enveloping, and genuinely atmospheric.
Structure and composition
The multi-tier structure distributes the glass tubes across several concentric levels, creating a composition of considerable architectural depth. Each tube: 9.7 in (25 cm) tall, 2.75 in (7 cm) in diameter; is substantial enough to carry visual weight individually, and in combination the effect is sculptural in the truest sense: this is a three-dimensional object that changes character as the viewing angle shifts and as the light within it dims or brightens. The nickel-plated frame is a deliberate material counterpoint to the softness of the pink glass.
